Hiring: Midweight Designer at Faculty – Portfolio Tips
At Faculty, we’re currently looking for a talented midweight designer to join our team. As a product designer, being well-rounded is key. Working in a consultancy-style business isn’t just about delivering high-quality design work – it’s about being a team player, understanding the big picture, communicating effectively, and paying attention to detail.
When putting your portfolio together, keep in mind:
- Focus on Quality, Not Quantity: Showcase your best 3–5 projects as full case studies. Make sure these highlight a range of your skills and experience. Quality always trumps quantity in a portfolio. Constantly review your portfolio, making sure you fix mistakes and redo screens that aren’t a true reflection of your skill.
- Make It Usable: Your portfolio should be easy to access via a well-presented website link. Passwords are ok but make sure you share them! This link is an opportunity to demonstrate your design and presentation skills. PDF portfolios don’t cut it any more. We don’t expect you to be a pro video editor, but as a designer you should recognise how to communicate your work effectively and concisely. Slides provide a good step by step way of structuring a story, or laying out a case study like slides. Sometimes video can be a fantastic way to communicate – consider showing a video of your work to stand out.
- What’s in a Case Study: we want to see your process. Case studies that show how you approach design problems are great. From stakeholder and client considerations to how you communicated your design decisions with the team: all are crucial. Who was on your team? Were you the only designer? What was the finished product? Did you do collect user feedback? I don’t mind not seeing sketches and post-its, but I need to understand the problem space.
- Show the Full Picture: Great design is more than visuals – it’s also about understanding users, collaborating, and communication. Use your portfolio to demonstrate how you bring these elements together.
We receive hundreds of applications for roles like these, however we endeavour to look at every portfolio. Yours needs to stand out. Make it count! If you have any questions or you are thinking of applying, leave a comment or message me on LinkedIn.
